2024 RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR

"The 2024 River Valley Pinot Noir still has some further settling to do in bottle, although its qualities are already clear. It’s closer to the Octagon Block than the Sleipnir Block in style and is relatively concentrated yet avoids toughness in texture or extract. It is perfumed and ripe, with deep raspberry, black pepper, green coffee and liquorice flavours, and there's a touch of autumnal fruit maturity in dried fig and black fruit, before a restrained tannic build slides into slatey, charry savoury notes. This most complete of English Pinots will unwind beautifully over the next decade, setting new highs for what is possible in Essex."

2024 SLEIPNIR BLOCK PINOT NOIR

"The first of Danbury's single block selections of Pinot Noir, the 2024 Pinot Noir Sleipnir Block comes from pure, heavy and water-restrictive clay with some calcareous influence on the eastern edge of the estate. It's an immediately arresting wine of more delicate build and extract than most other Danbury reds to date, and despite the natural inclination I sense among the team to prefer a little more structure, there's little lacking in this supple, silky selection. Pure, lifted sweet red cherry and raspberry fruit meets licorice and a thread of green peppercorn brightness, and the pure fruit concentration will keep this wine together beautifully over the next five years, at least. Taste, rather than quality, comes into play in choosing a favorite between this and the Octagon or River Valley, both of which may overtake this in time. Interestingly, this is all Dijon clone 777, where elsewhere the estate features German clones predominantly—perhaps a factor in its differing expression."

"Gold-green colour. Lime-cordial note on the nose, plus tropical fruit, coffee, cinnamon and coconut. Peach and pineapple on the palate plus bitter-orange peel. Creamy, almost buttery with coconut on the finish. Blimey, this could be California. Impressive."
